Overall champions Dean St Mart and Wendy McMurtry shared £1,000 between them at the second ever BPA Northern Ireland Grand Prix.
The event, promoted by former IFBB European champion and Amateur Olympia champion Steve Graham at Theatre at the Mill in County Antrim, saw many of Northern Ireland’s most in-trim physique competitors take to the stage.
When the tickertape came down on stage at the end it landed on Dean and Wendy, who had just been named overall champions. Besides taking home £500 each, they also claimed the Finn McCool and Irish Warrior Princess trophies and goodies from sponsors NI Supplements and Blu Nutrition.
Here’s how the day shaped up.
Female classes
Project manager Wendy McMurtry, who was competing in only her second ever show at the age of 45, proved to be the day’s standout star. With her beautifully balanced and chiselled physique, Wendy looked every inch a seasoned champion rather than a novice.
“I have trained for a couple of years, mainly for the head space benefits — the physical benefit was a side effect,” she said. Coach Emma McClean spotted the mother-of-two’s potential and it was easy to see why as she claimed first place in the open and masters bikini categories before taking the overall title against the day’s other female champions.
Bronagh Toleman also made a strong impression, showing how muscle can shape a tall physique to perfection by winning the masters and open bodyfitness classes. Bronagh’s conditioning was spot on. She had to be on her game because Lauren Baker, who was runner-up to her in both categories, was also in exceptional shape.
Sonia Canavan picked up the winner’s trophy in her first foray in the women’s physique category. Having outgrown the less muscular categories, Sonia looks well equipped to make her mark against the bigger women in the sport.
An eventful afternoon ended well for Lorraine Kelly, who initially entered bodyfitness but was moved to wellness by the judges, who felt her look better suited that category. Lorraine certainly has superb curves and a lot of potential. Masters bikini runner-up Heidi Parkinson also overcame adversity when her luggage containing her bikini, tan, shoes and make-up got lost at the airport, but she managed to improvise and displayed a fabulously well trained form.
Mens Classes
Dean St Mart had a day to remember. First, he defeated JJ Dunne in the bodybuilding up to 90kg category then he doubled up by winning classic physique and finally he won the overall trophy against the day’s other champions. Dean has plenty of muscle but he is no mass monster — his 86kg physique is all about aesthetics, combining crisp conditioning with outstanding proportions. Dean started competing in 2011 and actually retired in 2022 before almost inadvertently getting back on the stage. “I decided to get in shape for a holiday and it led to this,” he said. “It’s hands down the best show I’ve ever done. The whole day was flawless from start to finish.”
JJ Dunne had the consolation of winning the over-60s bodybuilding with a physique that showed an impressive amount of mass for an older competitor.
William Neill was another of the day’s stars, taking masters men’s physique over-50 with a terrifically shaped and shredded torso. It was great to see him enjoy being on stage so much too. Alexandru Zaharia won the open men’s physique with an upper body that could do some damage if he comes in a little tighter.
Kevin Cosgrove started the day off by winning the disability category. Kevin looked the epitome of health and strength on stage but he achieved this look despite having his heart functioning at only 16 per cent of its capacity.
